Designing For Slowness

Designing For Slowness

For as long as I can remember, we’ve designed experiences for speed. Fast food, fast travel, fast service. Less friction.

But I see culture starting to pull in the opposite direction.

Evidence of slowness is bubbling up everywhere. La Dolce Vita Orient Express turns a train journey through Italy into the destination. Slow food asks us to spend more time with what we eat and where it comes from. Hotels, restaurants and retailers are creating spaces designed to make us linger.

When everything is instant, slowness feels more valuable.

Which creates an interesting challenge for brands. Efficiency gets people through an experience quickly. But slowness can help them remember it.

Maybe the next frontier of experience design isn't about removing every single point of friction. Maybe it's knowing which moments deserve more time.
